The University undergraduate program in Communication and Media (KIM) represents a crossroads of knowledge from communication and media studies, as well as related fields such as cultural studies, sociology, psychology, political science, and creative disciplines like literature, photography, film, television, and new media. Media, in all its present and past forms - as a means of communication and carriers of information - are at the core of this program, which is primarily focused on the critical evaluation of communication and media messages.
Students acquire knowledge necessary for careers in media organizations, media monitoring and public communication agencies, media regulatory bodies, public and state institutions, institutions focused on public policy interests, civil society organizations, and a wide range of companies and institutions within the creative industries - such as television, film, e-publishing, video games, information-sharing apps, media-related applications, and more.
After completing the three-year undergraduate program in Communication and Media, students can continue their education at graduate programs in Croatia or abroad in the fields of communication, media, journalism, or public relations, as well as other programs within the social sciences.
The Communication and Media program is one of the youngest programs at the University of Split. The first generation of students enrolled in the academic year 2022/2023, and in 2024/2025, the program will graduate its first bachelor’s degree holders in communication and media.
What does it mean to study communication and media?
If we told you that it’s about acquiring the knowledge and skills of the future - which is already our present - a new era we are already living in, and one in which we will not be able to function without these competencies, it might both encourage and intimidate you. If we said this study program is preparation for a rapidly approaching world, and described that world as one full of wonder but also risks, then you’d understand why that duality is justified.
One of the program’s slogans is “read between the lines.” So maybe it’s best to start with letters. Just two centuries ago, with the rise of civil society, mass literacy, and the development of print, people dove into the realm of the printed word. This brought about the need to become literate in print. Of course, the fact that someone could recognize letters and string them into words didn’t mean they were fully literate. People had to learn how to navigate complex texts, engage in deep reading, critically evaluate texts, and more. A text is a complex machine - it takes time to master all its mechanisms and moving parts.
However, today’s digital media, which we are immersed in, are vastly more complex than traditional printed texts. This raises a new question: how do we educate people to be literate in today’s digital media constructs? Constructs that fuse text, image, and video - and are also interactive with the reader? Do you think it’s enough to know how to install and launch apps, open profiles, and post comments? That’s about as (in)sufficient as simply knowing letters was for print literacy.
Media and digital literacy require additional skills - so complex that we can barely define their full scope. A student or professional in this field will need to be highly versatile: knowledgeable not only about media but also the sociological, psychological, philosophical, and political implications of media. They will need to be both theoretically equipped and practically adaptable.
Studying Communication and Media means being among the first to recognize the complexity of the problem - and choosing to confront it. This program provides students with multidisciplinary theoretical grounding, as well as opportunities to participate in numerous media projects. Such a student is a pathfinder - their knowledge will soon become essential for human survival in today’s digital and media environment. Their skills will be in high demand. Considering how deeply media permeate all spheres of our lives, it’s only a matter of time before everything described here becomes a necessity, not a matter of choice.
And by enrolling in this program - time is on your side.
