On Friday, March 28, 2025, students from the Second Gymnasium in Split took part in a journalism workshop at the Communication and Media (KIM) program. Five senior students from the school’s Journalism Club — Antonela Borzić, Magdalena Čabo, and Roko Marušić (Class 4.f), Franka Kurobasa (4.d), and Frane Grbeša (4.e) — attended the event with their teacher and club mentor, Vesna Krželj Velić.
They were welcomed by Prof. Viktorija Car, head of the KIM program, Prof. Jelena Jurišić, and teaching assistant Vanja Pavlov. In the first part of the workshop, the group discussed journalism, media, and media literacy. Participants then split into two groups with different assignments.
Antonela, Magdalena, and Frane, together with second-year KIM student Ema Stipanović, participated in a live Radio Kampus broadcast where they discussed what qualities journalists should have and how students perceive the role of journalism today.
They also tackled various current media issues such as:
-
how the spread of disinformation affects the understanding of key 21st-century issues,
-
the rise of sensationalist and clickbait headlines,
-
repetitive and formulaic approaches to article writing,
-
and how media often impose a "constructed reality" by promoting societal standards tied to celebrity culture and influencer lifestyles — standards that influence not only physical appearance but also mental health.
The full broadcast is available on Radio Kampus.
Meanwhile, Roko and Franka were assigned to create a short social media video with the support of first-year KIM students Gabriela and Matea.
This workshop provided students with a valuable opportunity to delve deeper into the world of journalism. They expressed gratitude for the experience, which gave them new insights and practical skills. The workshop was part of the "Reconnecting Science with Blue Society - Blue-connect 2.0" project.
